A pharmacy network is a list of pharmacies your plan has contracted with. Narrow networks trade convenience for lower negotiated rates. Broad networks do the opposite.
Neither is wrong, but the choice has consequences at the counter. If your long-standing independent pharmacy is out of network, that is usually a plan design decision made months earlier, not a judgment about that pharmacy.
What is worth asking is whether the savings from a narrow network actually reach the member, or stop at the plan. In a spread-pricing arrangement, a lower pharmacy reimbursement does not necessarily mean a lower member cost; it can simply widen the margin in between.
If your pharmacy is out of network and switching is genuinely disruptive, call. Networks have exception processes, and a member advocate can usually tell you in one conversation whether an exception is realistic.
